Cactus Flowers

Took a shortcut through the alley one day last Fall and spied a pile of cactus pads, set out for the city's brush & bulky pick up. Hard to tell how long the pile had been there, the pads were quite shriveled. I planted several in the backyard in October, and 6 months later, voila. Flowers.

Creosote Galls

I'm writing an article about creosote. Again.
"A second type of creosote-specific insect is the gall midge. It is not one but several species of Asphondylia flies. They induce the plant to produce leafy galls which were smoked like tobacco by the Paiute. Interestingly, the flies are in an obligate symbiosis with a fungus that lines the interior of the gall, supplying food for the larvae and perhaps, a reason for smoking the galls."
